The Chilean red tides in Chiloe are on the spotlight – again. But this time, it is believed to be bigger than ever, causing huge fish kills and a big headache to fishermen, local authorities and consumers.
Dr. Claudio Fuentes Grünewald, – AlgaeWales team member and expert in microalgae – was contacted by the Chilean newspaper LUN to explain the “Red Tide outbreak”. Dr. Fuentes Grünewald, highlighted the importance of monitoring programs. He also suggested the possibility of using Dinoflagellates – a common microalgae species occurring in red tide events – as a resource to produce useful compounds for medical uses, including wound healing applications.
